AMVC --- HOMEWORK 1
++Phantasies++ is a 2021 mixed-media piece depicting a battle between two different creatures.
The piece was made during my obsession with hip-hop sampling, where I would listen to albums such as Entroducing..... by DJ Shadow, an album made entirely from sounds that he sampled from vinyl records. I wanted to bring a similar style of working to visual art, creating a collage of different elements; such as - Street Fighter health bars, Phoenix Wright text popups, and stills from Neon Genesis: Evangelion, among others.
The piece was made to resemble the aesthetic of Spacetoon, an Arabic cartoon channel for children which I grew up watching in the early 2000's.
Nicholas Mirzoeff's 2015 book, How to See the World: An Introduction to Images, he writes about when digital media emulates analog, 'A modern camera still makes a shutter sound when you press the button, but the mirror that used to move, making that noise, is no longer there'. I consider myself to being the opposite, with digital elements and effects being fabricated in analog ways.
